Do I pay tax on a UK business grant?

Often yes. For a company or a sole trader, a grant is usually income and can be taxed, unless that scheme or the tax rules say otherwise. Every Grant does not give tax advice. Ask an accountant before you spend the money as if it were all yours. The writing fee, if you pay one, is a cost of the business, not a cut of the grant.

Does the funder take the tax out?

Usually they pay the grant and you deal with the tax through the return. Read the award letter. It sometimes says how they expect you to treat it.

Is a household energy grant the same?

No. A discount on a heat pump or insulation is not the same as a trading receipt. The property scheme's own guidance is the place to check, then an accountant if you are unsure.

If you want the application written, the fee is fixed and shown before you pay: £450, £850, £1,450 or £2,200, set by the size of the award. Every Grant does not take a percentage of the grant, does not file the form, and is not part of GOV.UK. Confirm every scheme on the funder's own site.
