What happens if I spend a grant on the wrong thing?

The funder can ask for the money back. That is called clawback. It happens when the cost was never eligible, the project changed without permission, the same invoice was claimed twice, or the records do not exist. A draft from Find Grants does not insure you against that. Keep the quotes, the invoices and the approval.

What if the project costs less?

You usually return the unspent amount. A grant is not a bonus for coming in under budget unless the offer letter says you may keep it.
